Voter Registration to Start After Training of ELECAM Regional Staff - Fonkam Azu’u
The long awaited registration process on ELECAM’s voters’ lists will start immediately after the upcoming capacity building seminar to be organised by Elections Cameroon for the newly recruited staff in the ten regions.
Fokam Azu’u chairing ELECAM’s 1st Board Session in 2010
This revelation was made to the press last February 18 by ELECAM’s Board Chair, Dr. Samuel Fokam Azu’u during the first session of the Board this year which focused on the examination of ELECAM’s action plan in 2010.
Speaking to The SUN, he said ‘‘we are quite aware that Cameroonians are questioning themselves why registration on voters lists is not yet operational now. The answer is simply because we could not do otherwise since we were first ensuring that we obtain the legal framework which we had last year and secondly to make sure that our structures at the local level are fully functional at the level of the Regions, Divisions and Councils before we can proceed to the most important aspect of registering voters for elections.
After acquiring our own structures all over the national territory, recruiting staff and installing them, all we need now is to arm them with the necessary knowledge and materials on how to control electoral matters though we know that some of them are well equipped with electoral issues in the field.’’
The chairman however did not give any precise date when the exercise might kick-off. There are speculations that the new electoral code which is in gestation might influence the start of the exercise.
The board meeting which was also used to adopt the report of last year’s previous session was attended by all the twelve members of Elections Cameroon.
